A few weeks ago I spent the day at the beach with my roommates! We went to Will Rogers beach in Santa Monica, and it was really nice to spend some time outside of Westwood. I have barely been around Santa Monica and LA in general since I am from the Bay Area and this is my first year living in LA, and I loved it. It was so relaxing and not very crowded, and it was also nice to see how clean it was. I usually spend most of my time on campus, at the gym, in my apartment, or in Westwood, so it was really nice to be able to get out and explore other areas that are still close by. It's so interesting to see the diversity of the areas in LA, and how quickly it can transition from very urban and industrial to coastal and relaxed. We used the time at Will Rogers to spend quality time together and we agreed that we would limit our use of our phones and other electronics so that we could focus on each other and enjoying the atmosphere. The beach is one of my favorite places to recharge, and sometimes it makes me a little sad because I don't get to go as often as I like, so this was a very nice day for me. I think it is important for us all to find pockets of nature that we find comforting and make an effort to spend time immersing ourselves in them.

Yesterday I visited the UCLA botanical garden for the first time! I had heard all about it but as a transfer student and with this being my first year on campus, I really had no idea where it was and was unsure how exciting it would be since I had only been to the botanical garden in San Francisco which was grand. I had such a wonderful time! I had no idea that there was this much diverse wildlife right in the middle of Westwood, and it was really nice to just take a break from my classes and assignments to appreciate the biodiversity around me that I was unaware of. I saw a few benches and chairs in the garden and I look forward to going back and spending more time relaxing there and maybe bringing some friends.

The botanical garden is such a nice place to enjoy some nature and greenery. Before Covid, when classes were completely in person, I would go there in between my classes (during my breaks) to either do work or eat lunch. It was definitely very relaxing and one of my favorite parts of the day. There was actually a time period when they shut down the botanical garden, I think, and I was very sad about that.

One thing that I do to spend more time outdoors is to go on hikes! I love going on hikes with friends and chatting about life. Before Covid, when I used to live on the hill, the main way I would arrange to see friends was at the dining halls. Now, getting food with people all the time is definitely more expensive. For this reason, my friends and I regularly either go on hikes or take walks around Westwood (if we are short on time). There are so many hikes in LA that are so beautiful, and doing this has given me a chance to explore LA even more and find some beautiful lookout points. Some of the hikes that I have already done include the Hollywood Hike (a staple), the Will Rogers Hike, Mount Baldy (super super long), a bunch by Topanga and Malibu. I honestly do not remember the names of the hikes, but I do try to get one in every Sunday. I usually use All Trails to find a hike nearby (but sometimes drive a bit if I have time). All Trails is a super super useful app for hikers that helps you find trails close by, helps you find the trail head, keeps you on the trail, and assesses difficulty (so you know what you are getting yourself into). Going on these hikes has allowed me to clear my head, and really focus on the time that I am spending with a friend and with nature. It also has allowed me to escape city life for the duration of the hike and experience some quiet! I cannot recommend All Trails and trying out some local hiking trails enough!!

I recently  received these lovely flowers but realized that I didn't have a vase for them. A glass vase was just not something on my list of essentials for a college apartment, so I was thinking of what kinds of other containers I could use for the flowers instead of purchasing a vase. This bottle that the flowers are in in the photo is actually a Trader Joe's cranberry juice bottle! I personally think it was quite pretty, and it was so easy for me to remove the label and clean it out. I think it makes for the perfect vase and I look forward to using it the next time I buy or receive flowers. Usually I would just recycle these kinds of bottles along with other similar glass containers, bottles, or jars. But recently, I have been making an extra effort to save them, as they clearly can come in handy. I am running low on instant coffee now too, and I plan to save that glass container to use as a vase as well. While it is important to make an effort to recycle materials, I have really been enjoying the "reuse" part of reduce, reuse, and recycle. I look forward to finding new ways to repurpose items beyond their intended use, and I encourage you all to try as well!

I went home to San Jose over the long weekend and flew out of LAX. I don't have a car here in LA so I usually take an uber or lyft to the airport, or I might be able to get a ride from a friend if they are available. This time, a lot of my friends were busy, and the uber and lyft costs were higher than usual so I decided to take the bus to the airport instead! I will admit, it was a bit of a hassle with a suitcase and a backpack since the closest bus stop to my apartment is still a bit of a walk. Additionally, the ride took a bit longer than usual but I was not in a rush so that did not really bother me. However, the difference in cost was astounding. I paid $1 for my ticket. One dollar! After realizing how much money I could save and how much better this option is for the environment, I was fully sold on using the bus more often for getting around LA. The bus was nearly full, and I was happy to see people taking advantage of the limited public transportation in LA. This experience definitely encouraged me to try to use public transportation more often, and I hope more people do as well so that LA is able to expand its public transportation infrastructure as well.

Hey Iman! I'm glad to hear you've been taking an interest to take buses more often. As you said, it can be a huge hassle when you're carrying luggage with you on the bus. This is probably because the bus might be full at the time, and you're stuck lugging it around and try to make sure you don't invade another person's space on the bus.  Back at home in the East LA area, I would often take buses to get to a park, meet up with a friend, go to the mall, etc. In the beginning, it was more of a mandatory thing because back when I didn't have a car, my parents were not able to take me to places, so they suggested I go on the bus. As I got older, I realized how better it would be for the environment if I took the bus when needed. This turned into a habit in which I would take the bus when time permitted me to and reduce my carbon footprint. I try my best to take the bus as much as I can, but when I don't have the time to wait for a bus, I have no other choice than to take my car. Overall, I'm glad you had a good experience!

PS. This source I found from the UCLA transportation website also talks about the benefits are of taking a bus. Just in case, anyone else was curious or was interested in knowing.

I really related to this post Iman! I have been taking a couple of flights recently myself and found myself constantly taking $30+ uber rides back to my apartment when my roommates can't pick me up. I have known that bus rides are extremely cheap, even when the distance increases. However, when I return home from flights, it's usually the night time where I feel more uncomfortable taking a bus at night by myself. Also, at the moment being in a bus filled with people makes me a bit anxious just because I would be worried if anyone sat next to me due to COVID. How do you deal with that? Is this not as much as a worry for you as saving money is? I really do agree that the LA transportation system could do better, I wish lawmakers would do more to make that happen. LA barely has bicycle lanes, buses that are pretty confusing to follow if there are multiple routes, and just not the most friendly user experience. How do you feel about traveling alone? I feel like I never used transportation by myself except later in college, but I feel that I need to take more of an initiative with taking public transportation just because of the reduced impact busses have on the environment than cars. According to the source National Express Transit, "Buses emit 20% less carbon monoxide, 10% as much hydrocarbons, and 75% as much nitrogen oxides" than single passenger cars. As these gasses are main contributors for global warming, it is definitely better for the environment if we just take more bus rides than uber rides. However, I wish to explore more alternatives for safer night travels to ensure that I feel comfortable taking public transport by myself.

I've recently noticed that our utility bill has been extra high and I have been trying to think about why this may be. I myself have been extra conscious about turning off lights and turning off the thermostat when I am home alone or do not feel like they need to be on. I have noticed that sometimes my roommates may leave the lights on in their room when they go out for the night, or that the heat or AC will come on in the middle of the night when it isn't really necessary. I am generally non-confrontational, but I felt that this conversation was a really important one to have not only because of how expensive our bills are becoming, but also because of the wastefulness. I brought this up by mentioning how our utility bill has been extra high recently and if any of us could think of why. One of my roommates said that it might be due to having the heat on especially since it has been a bit cold recently. I also mentioned how we should all try to make an effort to turn off lights in rooms that we aren't in and make sure that if we're leaving the apartment empty that all of the lights and the thermostat is turned off. This was pretty well received, which was a relief! So I am hoping that we are able to make these small changes and see the impact.

Hi! I actually recently had the same issue this past winter season with our utility bill. When it was October, our utility bill was around $9 dollars, split among 3 people and now it has jumped to around $40 dollars for January split among 3 people for our gas bill. I have noticed that whenever I am busy, I find myself not paying attention to the appliances that I use. For example, when I need to run to class, I notice myself keeping the lights on or not even turning off the lights at the kitchen after I make myself coffee. It also doesn't help that we have no natural sunlight at our apartment, we constantly have to turn the lights. I am not sure of any alternatives of this, especially when our apartment is so dark during the winter times. Also, our apartment does not have any AC either, so when it is the summer, we constantly have to plug in several fans. One solution that we can have is just unplugging our devices when we are not using them. Another solution if it gets too hot in our apartment that I want to apply is to cover our windows. This is a pretty cost effective method that we could all apply as college students because many of our apartments don't have ACs. Another way to save money and reduce the amount of money being spent, we can clean out our air filters. Also, I am trying very hard to spend less time in the shower. At the moment, I take around 12 minutes in the shower. However, I think I can get it down to around 8 minutes, especially if I stop the water when I am shampooing and conditioning. So much water is spent on opening the bottle that I feel that I can save water and make the whole experience more efficient. Some of my roommates and other people in other apartments have expressed that they use as much water as they want because we don't pay for water but I feel like this is very wasteful and try to tell them that that's not the best option. Hopefully I can convince them not to do so.
