REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Ivy Shaw 12/03/2020 1:54 PMNo, I have never heard the term silvopasture before this. I think the productivity and health of the land and animals improve is probably the biggest advantage and the financial benefits for farmers and ranchers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Ivy Shaw 12/03/2020 1:28 PMI learned that the government banned CFCs. I learned that chemicals like CFCs can be released into the climate and thin the ozone layer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 6:59 PMYes. My carbon footprint wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be which is good but the site that I used to determine the carbon footprint explained and showed me multiple ways I can do better and reduce my footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 6:57 PMJust admiring the beauty in it and the quietness can be calming and it's always good to get fresh air being in a pandemic and all where you have to stay inside most of the time. It's also good for me to go out and walk to get a little exercise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 6:44 PMI think to be on a path to a more sustainable community would be to get more Methane Digesters, it seems to really help the environment. It reuses waste to generate power. Methane digesters really improve sustainability. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 6:10 PMI learned that in certain places there are women who are in serious need and aren’t receiving the same type of safe family planning methods as other women because they are living in different types of circumstances and don’t have the money or correct information and/or resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 11:40 AMThe impact it has on my thinking is how much humans have an impact on the environment and how we can do way better to try and do better to help the environment. A part that is overwhelming is all the threats towards those forests, there are multiple threats like there experiencing severe wildfires and frequent droughts, there experiencing hotter and longer heat waves, as well as worsening insect and pathogen outbreaks. These disturbances can push temperate forests beyond their capacity for resilience. The part where they talk about restoration and how with restoration comes additional carbon sequestration. Which means there is more carbon dioxide being removed from the atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 11:00 AMChoices we can make to help protect peatlands are conserve water, try to reduce pollution, and do things like properly recycling and waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Ivy Shaw 11/30/2020 9:59 AMMany women don't know about possible opportunities. Men tend to choose other men for roles instead of women. Women aren't given the same opportunities.
