Electricity
Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon Cycle
Climate change is occurring because of a phenomenon that is also a very basic chemical reaction. When fossil fuels burn, carbon dioxide is produced. Usually, this reaction balances out as carbon dioxide is then used during photosynthesis. However, the amount of carbon being produced currently, due to our overuse of fossil fuels, is tipping this delicate balance. We'll talk more about the effects later on...in the meantime let's learn about how to reduce the ways WE start chemical reactions that create carbon. Use the link below to measure your carbon footprint.
Electricity
Intro to the Carbon Cycle
In Earth Science this year, we're going to be talking a lot about climate change and the carbon cycle. Take a minute to read the article/video linked below and answer the reflection question.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Climate Change Skepticism
Visit the link below and read about a common misconception about climate change and Earth's cycles. Answer the reflection question.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 10 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Electricity
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Transportation
Explore Other Transportation Solutions
All Transportation Solutions
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching other Drawdown Transportation Solutions.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 5 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 3 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 2 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Buildings
Explore Other Buildings Solutions
All Buildings Solutions
I will spend at least 1 minutes researching other Drawdown Buildings Solutions.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Explore Other Buildings SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Scott Shockley 4/22/2021 7:56 AMI found out that even changing the energy source of the building can significantly reduce the carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Scott Shockley 1/28/2021 7:40 AMWave energy is the capture of energy by ocean surface waves, it is more natural than other forms of energy-
Scott Shockley 1/28/2021 7:50 AMGood question Camden. By "other forms" I meant non-renewable energy. And it has to be on the coast which we need for things like fishing and other stuff but windmills can be placed everywhere. Also, I believe wind is just more powerful overall. But, the waves could possibly be better than the wind since waves are constant but I don't know I only researched for 10 minutes.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Scott Shockley 1/28/2021 7:27 AMI always like to ride my bike. It is a good way to get out the house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Climate Change Skepticism1. Summarize the argument people are making about global warming and it's causes 2. What is incorrect about this information/argument? 3. What would you say to someone who is skeptical?
Scott Shockley 1/21/2021 7:36 AM1. One argument is that the Climate has changed before and we shouldn't worry now. 2. Although the climate has indeed changed before, humans have still had a major effect on how it's changing now. Also, when the climate has changed in the past, it has been a gradual change that took many years, this is a quick and uncontrollable change. 3. I would tell someone that all of the other changes are natural and humans are responsible for this one. I would also tell them that this is a sudden change, not a gradual one.-
Jess Norris 1/21/2021 12:02 PMFantastic! Those skeptics won't know what's coming with this very simple yet truthful reply.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon CycleWhat's one way you can either offset or limit the amount of carbon you are producing?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Intro to the Carbon Cycle1. Where does carbon originate? 2. How is carbon released? 3. Where does carbon go once it's released? 4. What is the connection between carbon change, fossil fuel use, and the carbon cycle?
Scott Shockley 1/07/2021 7:49 AM1. Carbon is found in the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. It is also found inside rocks and the ocean.
2. The carbon cycle is the Earth's way of reusing carbon. The Atmosphere sends carbon to the earth and it can be released through combustion into the atmosphere.
3. Once carbon is released carbon goes into rocks and the ocean.
4. Since humans have been using more fossil fuels CO2 levels are higher than ever.
