Sky Stewart 1/31/2020 10:24 PMThis challenge has really had me thinking about all kinds of ways I navigate my life on this planet. Its been a great learning experience for my self and my family. I'm really proud of all the effort and learning everyone has put into this, especially the kids. Thank you for initiating this Erin and thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and new knowledge.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Sky Stewart 1/31/2020 10:19 PMPerception and judgement from others is often a huge barrier to equal participation. In the early stages of potential engagement, we all are very vulnerable to negative judgements or discouragement from others. When we were river guides, often we had passengers who wouldn't trust the female guides to get them safely down the river. We would witness passengers avoiding boarding rafts piloted by female guides and crowding to rafts piloted by males, not knowing that the female guides they were avoiding were far more experienced and skilled. This often resulted in less passengers in their rafts and accordingly a diminished opportunity to get tips. I'm sure dealing with that negative judgement and decreased earning potential was very discouraging to many would-be female guides pursuing raft guiding as long as they would have liked. -

Sky Stewart 1/23/2020 8:56 PMAn interesting article on the Ashland Food Co-op website about bioplastics and plastic packaging:

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Sky Stewart 1/23/2020 8:48 PMMy biggest concern about how we are affecting the planet pertains to cumulative toxicity to the environment, especially nuclear wastes. The earth has gone through many cycles of warming and cooling and I'm sure will continue to go through many more- I just don't know how the new things we have introduced will affect the long term health of the planet and its established pendulum of environmental equilibrium. -
Sky Stewart 1/15/2020 8:03 PMThank you for a fun gathering last night!! After talking with Tate and River about coffee, I'm planning on doing a little research to learn more about responsible coffee growing. We drink a lot of coffee in our household and if there is any opportunity to optimize our coffee consumption in a more environmentally responsible way that would be a substantial accumulated "drawdown". I also got a peek at Davis' plastics book- definitely excited to borrow as it looks full of a wide variety of good info. Nice to meet some new folks as well!!-
Erin M 1/18/2020 2:15 PMI'd love to hear why you learn, Sky! Super interested in making better choices for our family too! -
Allison Wildman 1/16/2020 7:03 PMGreat goal! I totally love Case... but I'm not sure Amy does. Sounds like a fun research project... go on multiple coffee dates and taste lots of sustainably sourced coffee. -
Robert Wildman 1/15/2020 10:19 PMI think the key is getting beans from a roaster that not only sources based on environmental sustainability but also fair trade. I know both Case and Noble meet all of their suppliers face to face and strive to achieve this. Just so happens they are also the best roasters. Make the switch and you should be good to go.

Sky Stewart 1/15/2020 7:49 PMI finished a bag of chips today and realized the chip bag would be a good garbage can liner for one of our small bathroom trash cans. Saved it for later! -
Sky Stewart 1/15/2020 7:46 PMYesterday I printed a drawing for a client to look at and approve. As I pulled out the drawing for them, I realized that it was on a piece of paper I had printed something on before that had gotten reloaded into the printer and that the previous printing was showing through the drawing. I had this split second conflict of feeling unprofessional but a good Earth steward. It still has me feeling conflicted- am I glad I had reused a piece of paper for that particular circumstance or would it have been worth it to have the drawing unblemished. One thing is clear- other people's judgment can influence our decisions that effect the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Choose Recycled PaperGood job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?
Sky Stewart 1/12/2020 7:32 PMOne thing I have to do for my work with construction design is print out final designs for proofing. If I print these proofs on both sides of pieces of paper, I can reduce my paper consumption.
