REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Dawni Callaghan 2/13/2023 8:28 AMWe have many local businesses that cater to the bamboo lifestyle. I received bamboo chopsticks and don't know why I didn't start eating with them sooner, plus it really helps with my portion control. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Dawni Callaghan 2/13/2023 8:13 AMFor me personally, it helps decrease my gastroparesis symptoms and increases my digestive health. I never knew I had such issues and then, after 12 years and seeing provider after provider to find out what is wrong, I'm diagnosed with gastroparesis amongst other health problems. Decreasing my portions was a giant leap into my new eating habits and healthier life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Dawni Callaghan 8/19/2020 1:57 PMAfter the plane trip experience that we had last year, which was the first time flying, we vowed only to take a train or bus to our destinations. We live in Washington and in a couple of weeks, we will be taking a sunset kayak whale watching tour departing from Roche Harbor. It's not that far of a trip, but we are super excited. We will be taking a train, which personally, is the ONLY way to travel!! Being able to check things off of our bucket list is always an exciting experience for us. Plus, it's the week of our wedding anniversary <3. So to answer the question, the process was MUCH easier than trying to find a flight, plus the money we save is great! #travelbytrain :) -
Dawni Callaghan 8/13/2020 5:04 PMI enjoy working from home, but at the same time, it is so difficult. I'm only working from home on Monday's now, and spend the rest of the week in my office, 30 miles from home. The motivation for exercise factor gets thrown out the door at times, either after work on Mondays, or when I get off the bus the rest of the week. What do you guys suggest for this motivational problem I am having? It's been 100+ degrees daily (hottest time is around here is between 3-6 pm) here, so my dog isn't wanting to spend much time outside (he's geriatric, blind and deaf), by the time i'm off work, it's time to start dinner or at least pitch in on the chores around the apartment before starting dinner, and then we eat, clean up from dinner and get ready for the next day. Then it's pretty much bed time. My spouse has to wake up anywhere between 2:45 am and 4 am so we go to bed pretty early. A friend told me that just like work, she has to create a "home" workflow and pretty much stick to it, and I like that advise, but hoping for more than one opinion. I don't do anything physical in my line of work anymore because what I was doing prior, was way too physical. So now, I sit at my desk with reminders to get up and move because my job now consists of sitting at my computer on my phone speaking with behavioral health patients. By the end of the day, i'm so mentally exhausted from taking on everyone's anxiety, stress and mental instability, that I physically feel exhausted. I would really appreciate some input on how to get my booty moving after work :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Dawni Callaghan 8/06/2020 3:52 PMI used to use sandwich baggies for everything in my lunch bag, but then one day about 5 years ago, I started the ecohallenges and my eyes were opened to all the things I was doing to harm our planet/environment. I now use a reusable container, silverware, water bottles, coffee cup and anything else that is reusable, for each lunch at work, each day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Dawni Callaghan 8/06/2020 3:43 PMI had NOT heard of Silvopasture before, which is a surprise because I live in a small orchard town surrounded by farming land. I had read that silvopasture is likely one of the top climate-saving forms of agriculture available. If that isn't one of the most important advantages of silvopasture, i'm not sure what is. Then we have our diverse landscapes that support all kinds of wild walks of live. Now moving on to the farmlands... being able to feed your family by land? Yes please!! Too many benefits to silvopasture to not want to be a part of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Dawni Callaghan 7/14/2020 1:32 PMThe local bus that I ride are electric buses, especially the ones that travel the farthest, like mine. I'd rather ride the bus than drive our own car. Why Not?!?! They get me to work early and pick me up/drop me off practically at my front door. The drivers (most of them) are amazing! I have been riding THIS bus system for about 5 years now and I love it!! As far as the bus stop goes, my wife and I put up a pinwheel since we live in probably the windiest place in WA, and sprinkled some seeds around for the local Rock Chucks (Groundhogs?). With the COVID still hanging around, people need to know that they are appreciated and loved, even if it's just spreading a little color... plus our local critters need lovin' too :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Conduct Virtual MeetingsHow can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?
Dawni Callaghan 6/24/2020 9:59 AMI have worked in the medical field for 20 years and the last 5 of these years have been with the same company. I have worked many specialties, but have found myself in love with Behavioral Health. "My People" work in this department. No judgements, no caddiness, but yet everyone is as unique as I am and I like working with every singe one of them for partly having the same interests that I do, and that is helping our planet and learning how to treat it better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Dawni Callaghan 6/16/2020 8:39 AMI have been riding the city buses for years. Starting in a small town, graduating to a huge city and now back to the first small town. I love the system and am thankful everyday for our drivers, especially during this crazy time. I live 20 miles away from the town I work in and rely on the bus system to get to work and back. It saves us so much money in gas and also helps keeps the pollution down. Our buses are also electric so I don't feel bad about trading one pollution for another :)-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Dawni Callaghan 6/04/2020 1:57 PMNow that I am working back in the clinic, I walk on my 60 minute lunch breaks. What I have noticed is that everyone wants to be a part of nature (sitting under a tree in the grass, taking a quick jaunt on the trail up the road, etc.) but the problem is that the trails are still closed and the distancing rule is in place. I love to spend alone time reading my book in the courtyard so the social distancing doesn't bother me much. Other than that, there is literally no other place to spend outside other than the over crowded courtyard at the company I work for. We need more parks to open so everyone can enjoy the outdoors IN THE GRASS, not on concrete.
