REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Lucia Smith 5/26/2020 6:25 AMI think a sustainable community would be one in which everyone lives in harmony with nature. We all need to connect with nature and understand her power and magic first. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Lucia Smith 5/22/2020 6:20 AMI learned that complications from pregnancy and giving birth are the most common causes of death in girls ages 15 to 19 around the world. Also, lower fertility rates often help families escape poverty and give them access to opportunities. In remote areas, it is harder for people to get access to education about family planning, as well as birth control. In higher-income countries, however, it is more a matter of being responsible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Lucia Smith 5/20/2020 5:36 AMI can not buy products with palm oil or palm products, and save paper by reusing and recycling it.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Lucia Smith 5/15/2020 7:31 AMI love trails by water because the sound is calming. The more trails the better! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Lucia Smith 5/15/2020 6:00 AMI am very concerned about plastic production, because we use an astonishing amount of both “reusable” and single-use plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Lucia Smith 5/13/2020 6:42 AMI definitely feel more aware about how much my actions affect the climate.I am overwhelmed by how hard it will be to get everyone on board with saving the planet through our actions. I feel hopeful when I am in nature, because I see how strong, powerful, beautiful, and resilient she is. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Lucia Smith 5/12/2020 6:48 AMBy choosing alternative transport, we can connect more with our community during bus, train, carpool, etc. rides. I enjoy walking and biking very much. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Lucia Smith 5/11/2020 7:46 AMI am very worried about climate change, but do my best to help with waste reduction, etc., and try to stay calm. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIt is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” What is your response to that statement?
Lucia Smith 5/11/2020 7:07 AMThat is ridiculous. Organic food is what we should all be eating every day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Lucia Smith 5/11/2020 7:06 AMBecause meat is expensive often, and it is also very unsustainable for the planet because of deforestation and green house gases. It is also healthier to eat mostly plant-based.
