"I want to make sure that the Earth remains a habitable place for future generations, and that humanity as a whole can halt the dire predictions coming our way. Since elementary school, I was taught about global warming but it always left like a distant issue instead of the threatening monster it is. One Ecochallenge at a time, I hope to become more mindful of my carbon footprint and to be able to decrease my waste emission."

    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 6/05/2023 10:27 PM
Implementing these "R's" in my everyday life feels great, since I am helping the environment in a positive way without very much effort on my part. One example that falls under repurposing is that when I have an old shirt which isn't in great condition to be donated, I use it as a cleaning rag. This reduces waste and also turns that material into something useful so that I don't have to go buy something else for the task. I also have a reusable metal water bottle that I use everyday, but occasionally I do forget it and so I need to buy a plastic water bottle. I don't immediately recycle this plastic water; instead, I use it and refill it with water many times in an attempt to make up for the fact that it is made of harmful plastic.

Hi Andreea, this is great! Ever since I was little I would often times see my mom utilize old clothing pieces as rags for cleaning, and I now do the same. Even when a piece of clothing of mine is torn I sew it up and reuse it. I also relate to you with the water bottle. I personally don't own a reusable flask and buy water bottle cases, but once I finish the water I continue to refill the same water bottle until it becomes extremely flimsy.

What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 6/03/2023 6:20 PM
Repurpose is one of the R's that I don't practice very often, but I think it is a strategy that everyone could implement in order to reduce waste. One way to do this is to donate clothes that are in good condition to charities. I go through every piece of clothing in my closet every summer, and this time around I'm going to make sure that my clothes go to a respectable charity. I'm also going to make a bigger effort to remember to bring a reusable grocery bag when I go shopping so that I don't have to take a paper or plastic bag.

Hi Andreea, I think this is a great strategy to incorporate more "R's" into your day-to-day life. I'm also going through my clothes right now and deciding what to get rid of, before going home for summer. I just signed up to receive a For Days "Take Back Bag" for their collaboration event with UCLA. For Days is a zero-waste fashion brand that sells clothing made from recycled and recyclable materials. As part of this collaboration event, they'll send me a reusable bag, which I fill with unwanted clothing, linens, shoes, etc. Then, they pick up all of the bags in Westwood (local transport!) and they pledge to recycle a minimum of 95% of what's in your bag. It's a great event, especially for college campuses, when everyone throws out lots of old things before leaving for summer. I remember that last year, on the hill, there were bins that you could throw old clothes and shoes in that would then be donated to charities. I think convenient access to programs like these will encourage more people to donate their unwanted items and re-purpose items for those in need. As far as grocery shopping, I am also guilty of forgetting to bring reusable bags sometimes. But I recently painted some canvas tote bags with friends, and now we always remember to bring them with us if we're going shopping. It was a fun activity and a cool way for us to spend some time together. And now, we're all committed to using these totes instead of plastic bags. I highly recommend!

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 6/01/2023 7:08 PM
It was't super difficult for me to change my diet in this way. I'm not a huge coffee person, so I'm able to remove the occasional cup of coffee from my diet. I do love sweets and chocolate, but I've been able to replace these processed foods with fruits. Not only am I having a positive impact on the environment by not consuming these products, but I also feel great about myself as I am making better choices.

Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 5/31/2023 5:03 PM
There are plenty of bamboo alternatives available in my community at UCLA and at home. Many things in the kitchen can be replaced from being metal and plastic to bamboo. This is another small change in the right direction which will make an impact if everyone is able to do their part.

      Hi Andreea,

I totally agree that UCLA makes it very accessible to have bamboo or wood alternatives. UCLA dining services provide wooden utensils and paper straws, which are significantly less harmful on the environment than using plastic utensils. I think the best thing to do, however, is using reusable utensils you may already own so that you do not contribute to the burden of manufacturing the product.

This weekend I went back home and went on a long hike on Monday. It was so refreshing to be in nature and not in front of a computer screen. The superbloom was obvious, as seen in the picture, as flowers were taller than me. I was thinking about how the greed of people is what is driving the destruction of Mother Nature everywhere, and I was saddened that future generations may not see these beautiful hills that I loved. If everyone was to walk more, even once a week instead of driving their car, we could be in a better place in terms of global warming. In the daunting face of climate change, it is rewarding to know that even a pleasant hike in nature can help set back the dire predictions ahead.

Hey Andreea, this is a beautiful picture! It is very refreshing to step out and take some time away from the screen. I've also been trying my best to go on daily walks each week, and when I do I find that its a great way to help me destress.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 5/22/2023 1:37 PM
There are definitely health benefits from eating smaller portions as you are consuming less calories. This also leads to less food waste since you are able to finish eating what was on your plate. A good strategy that I use is getting a plate with not too much food on it, and then getting more small plates if I need them. This is better than loading a big portion onto your plate and then only eating half of it and wasting the rest.

Hi Andrea! I completely agree I often serve myself a small but fulfilling amount of food and if by the end of finishing my plate I serve myself a smaller portion so I won’t throw my food away. Often I notice when I serve self a big portion I find it unappetizing and also if I do eat the plate after I feel so tired.

Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 5/01/2023 3:41 PM
I don't eat seafood on a regular basis, but I do enjoy fish, sushi, or poke from time to time. I was aware that sustainable fishing existed, but I hadn't realized the extent of the existing guidelines. Now that I have seafoodwatch.org as a resource, I will make sure to do my part in making the best choice possible when it comes to seafood. This will ensure that my diet choices will fall within the necessary guidelines. The climate crisis solution that I have been exploring is coral reefs, and one of their main threats is overfishing. By using these buying guides, I will be sure that I do not contribute to that problem and instead have a positive impact on coral reefs as well.

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Andreea Soricut's avatar
    Andreea Soricut 4/30/2023 11:07 AM
When I ate my meal in the dining hall without looking at my phone, I was able to really think about the taste of the food that I was eating and be more aware of how much I was eating. Other times when I do look at my phone at the same time as eating, I realize that I eat too fast and without properly processing what I am consuming. Eating mindfully also allowed me to see my fellow bruins and observe what foods they were eating. Since I wasn't on my phone, I saw my good friend waiting in the pasta line and then we ended up having dinner together. It was nice to catch up since we hadn't talked in a while, and this probably wouldn't have happened if I had been on my phone. I strive to practice mindfulness while eating at least once a day.

Hey Andreea, I totally have the same problem with using my phone all the time. I am so used to having some form of stimulation almost at all times, and I really do think it is important to have time away from technology. Doing these eco challenges and reading about other people's experience with mindful eating or just using our phones less in general is encouraging. I think that it definitely is hard to do something with no intentions other than just to do that thing. Mindfulness is definitely hard, especially after a long day.

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

I am able to get all of the vitamins and nutrients that I need, without the added sugars and chemicals found in processed desserts. Other people can be positively influenced to also eat more fruits and vegetable, and eating less meat definitely helps our planet as it reduces humanity's carbon footprint one person at a time.

Hi Andreea. I totally agree! Reading the labels on some of the fruit containing granola bars or fruit juices at the market shows how many added preservatives and chemicals processed foods contain. We are much better off just getting the fruity taste from actual fruit! Even better is getting these fruits and vegetables from local food sources- like the Westwood Farmer's Market- which also helps reduce our carbon footprints.

On my walks I've noticed details like how the weather has changed the beach, and that a few new house are being built. I enjoyed just being outside and breathing the fresh air, while also getting some exercise. Having a path to walk on closer to the ocean water and further from the houses could make my walks more enjoyable and leave me feeling even more connected to Mother Nature.
