I chose to act on the issue of wind turbines since Monterey is a very windy county with large open spaces for agriculture. Like in Gonzales, there are available spaces to fit in wind turbines that can lower our reliance on natural gas and fossil fuels.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

This was a relatively easy challenge but I was surprised to learn about how many food products contain palm oil. The elimination of coffee was a struggle with it being my usual caffeine fix, but learning about the impact I can have by making small daily changes make it worth the effort.

maybe you dont need to cut out all coffee but consume it in a manner that reflects its true cost. Drink less of it and only buy from responsible producers. It might cost more but it would be a more honest way to consume.

I learned that besides infant formula, there is no requirement for foods to be dated. If a food product has a date it must be in a truthful manner. By learning the difference between different labeled dates I can ensure I minimize my food waste while also purchasing the best food for my needs.

I sent this to my friend who would travel by plane to go home several times a year. He was shocked to see his total as he never thought about how other modes of transportation could be more environmentally friendly. I suggested instead carpooling with other students also heading to his hometown and splitting gas costs, therefore saving his pocket money and limiting the carbon emissions made with his flights.

After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

My carbon footprint was 4 tons of CO2 monthly. Largely my emissions come from eating meat with most meals and driving a gas vehicle to get around. One big change I could make is to cut down on my meat eating and explore more climate friendly diets.
