  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Learn about Carbon Offsets
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Kathleen Sullivan's avatar
    Kathleen Sullivan 4/16/2021 3:28 PM
Important considerations for purchasing carbon offsets can include determining if carbon mitigation would have occurred independent of your purchase, the permanence of the project your funds are supporting, leakage of carbon mitigations (1 forest is saved, while another is destroyed in its place), and an overall verification of these considerations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

One step closer to becoming a more sustainable traveler! While our beloved hotel and airline statuses may suffer as consultants working from home, I've enjoyed staying rather stationary, even more so knowing that the Earth appreciates it too
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Kathleen Sullivan's avatar
    Kathleen Sullivan 4/16/2021 2:56 PM
I had no idea different zip codes factor into your personal carbon footprint! Based on factors such as household size, diets, methods of transportation, travel, and energy sources, this carbon calculator really paints a picture of how many tons of carbon just one household produces every month. Now knowing the breakdown of this footprint calculation, my household can start making daily changes such as eating less meat, switching to more sustainable energy sources, and being conscious of our travel methods
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Kathleen Sullivan's avatar
    Kathleen Sullivan 4/16/2021 2:46 PM
In the simplest of terms, a sustainable community would gather their waste to transform it into a usable energy source. MSU sets a great example for what a sustainable community could look like. They put their dining hall food waste, dairy manure, and biosolids into a methane digester which, after about a month, transforms it into energy to power their campus. I would be excited to see the day many universities choose to follow in MSU's footsteps!
