Anisha Thomas 2/10/2022 11:53 PMI went to the Westwood Farmers market today with a couple of my friends instead of Ralphs to just check it out. I was intrigued just by the variety of items that were being sold instead of just produce. I did notice that the prices were around $3-4 dollars higher, which at first was alarming to me but then I heard how they sourced their produce and it made sense. These farmers used sustainable practices such as crop rotation and less pesticide use which has better environmental impacts. There was also a diverse body of shop owners, including many p.o.c so it is a great way to help support different communities if you were thinking of doing so!
What I saw while moving around:
-Compost station- you can throw away compost if there isn't one
-Volunteers that can verify whether your compost is actually compost- so there are no stickers in the compost
-Friendly application process for selling produce, clothing, and jewelry.
- Stamp card you can collect 1 stamp per visit- every 10 visits you can get a 10 dollar gift card- encourages others to shop at the farmers market but also incentivizes doing so
This was a fruit juice stand where the produce used was "imperfect" and organic. The produce used created freshly squeezed juices with prices that were quite comparable to Jamba Juice! I would definitively recommend buying from a farmers market if you wanted to try something new! Here we saw a lot of vintage t-shirts, sweaters, and pants that were great quality. There was also a great selection of patterns, sizes, and materials so a great place to look if you wanted to find unique pieces. The prices were also pretty reasonable and comparable to prices from fast fashion brands like H&M, Zara, and Forever 21. -
Anisha Thomas 1/18/2022 11:41 AMI partook in the activity eating mindfully today while eating my lunch for 30 minutes before my first class of the day started. I usually watch something during my breaks so this was a new experience for me. During my break time, I just talked to my roommate and ate a lot slower than I usually do. This was a good experience because I was able to be more mindful of how much food I was eating but also just take a very needed break from the excessive screen time from zoom. When I was more mindful of my bites, I also became more full quicker and didn't feel the need to grab a snack right after my meal to make up for the remaining time I had for my break, if I was watching my show. It was also nice to just be left alone with my thoughts because I usually watch shows to forget about what I have due, but instead I had a conversation and caught up with my roommates. This experience encouraged me to do this more often, but if my roommates are busy, I can try reading a book or sit outside and eat. This way I can also just spend some time with myself and collect my thoughts. -
