  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

To be honest, the anxiety about feeling like my generation’s being handed a world that’s falling apart because of the reckless and selfish actions of those before me. It’s really frustrating that the resulting consequences are going to fall onto our shoulders, and the increasing severity of the situation is more than overwhelming.
Moving on, I feel very hopeful about how my generation is being educated about climate change and other serious environmental issues; hopefully that will mean that we can come to common consensus that something needs to be done, rather than ignore the problem or claim ‘fake news’.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Elizabeth Thompson's avatar
    Elizabeth Thompson 12/09/2020 7:59 PM
I learned that family planning includes more than just providing education about sex, pregnancy, and contraceptives, but also providing availability to those resources. Moreover, this is especially true about people in less developed countries or lower income areas, because there is less access to education and these resources compared to places like America.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Elizabeth Thompson's avatar
    Elizabeth Thompson 11/25/2020 8:43 PM
My diet is impacting deforestation because the items I consume contain certain materials/ingredients that fuel the demand for deforestation in order to increase production, and thus, profit. What I can do to decrease my impact, and thus increasing my positive impact, is I can decrease my usage of these products by using alternatives or cutting them out of my diet completely, or I can look for Rainforest Alliance approved products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Elizabeth Thompson's avatar
    Elizabeth Thompson 11/24/2020 4:47 PM
I did! and I understand what actions I should take to reduce it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Elizabeth Thompson's avatar
    Elizabeth Thompson 11/24/2020 3:08 PM
I will view them with the knowledge that they all mean different things, unlike my previous perception, and act accordingly. I will also view them less as “set in stone” dates and more flexible, discarding my mindset of “once it’s past the date on the box I must throw it away.”
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Elizabeth Thompson 11/24/2020 2:17 PM
We could replace/revamp the Vance monument in downtown Asheville and use it for microwind electricity production instead!
