Become a certified Climate Ambassador!
The Climate Museum in NYC is working with local teens to form a Climate Volunteer Coalition! The first step is to educate yourself on the main talking points around climate change. Next, share your knowledge! To help you do this, the Climate Museum has produced a pocket-sized "Climate Ambassador" card. Read the instructions, print the card, cut/fold, and start talking to the people! If you don't have a printer--make your own! https://climatemuseum.org/ambassador **With parent permission** You can also sign up on the Climate Museum website for more info. You can even post a reflection that the Museum will publish on their website for all to see!

Climate Change and Wildfires: How is climate change affecting you? Our hometown? And what can we do now?
First, the article about the CA wildfires and climate change. Climate Change In Your Hometown The featured article discusses the connection between climate change and California wildfires. Another Times article, from 2018, lets you track how the number of days when temperatures hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) or higher changes in your hometown over your lifetime. As you look at the graph created based on your hometown and the year you were born, what do you notice? (If you want, try entering the birth year of your parents or grandparents as well.) Then, scroll to see the climate predictions for your hometown when you are 80 years old. Continue to scroll to learn more about these predictions, and then see how your hometown compares to other parts of the country and the world using the interactive globe.

Native Land and Practices Acknowledgement
Native Land Acknowledgement means to learn about, talk about, and show respect for the Native inhabitants of an area of land. We do this for many reasons: to correct history, protect and preserve the culture and identity of native peoples, acknowledge the role of European colonization in the loss of native lives and lands. For this activity, read about the Lenape. The tribe indigenous to Brooklyn, Queens , and Manhattan. Who are they, what was NYC like before colonization? How can we honor the Lenape today? We are all connected: Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. Of course, she was not the first African woman to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize but racism, colonialism, and sexism have long played into this award. Read about Maathai, a biologist and activist, and reflect on what Americans can learn about her work and apply to our own hemisphere.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?
Bowen Todd 6/09/2021 5:53 AMHuman-powered transportation makes me feel very powerful and strong compared to other kinds of transportation such as cars, planes, buses, and trains. Being able to bike or walk makes you stronger and is great exercise. I do a lot of biking and only try to use my car if I am going far places. But I do a lot of biking to soccer and bike and sometimes just for fun to get exercise. So, human-powered transportation makes me feel really good because I get to get places without emitting even more carbon into the air. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Bowen Todd 6/09/2021 5:47 AMI have noticed that when I go on a walk, my mind lets go of all of the chaos going on around me and I just focus on the nature and peacefulness of a walk. I enjoy being able to do this sometimes because I am able to enjoy myself and let loose into nature. Maybe something that might make my walks more enjoyable might be to ask my friends if they want to go on a walk with me or going on a family watch for my family and I can connect and go on a peaceful walk together, something that we don't get to do all the time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal BLM/BHMHow can this guiding principle show up in our school community on a regular basis?
Bowen Todd 2/24/2021 5:49 AMThese guiding principles can show up in our school community on a daily basis because we can follow these principles and we can treat everyone with respect as shown in these principles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Carbon Footprint CalculatorWhat can you do to either lower your carbon footprint OR "offset your carbon footprint. When you "offset" you basically pay it forward---you do something kind for the environment or another person to balance out your carbon use if you can't reduce it.
Bowen Todd 1/06/2021 5:56 AMOne way that I can lower my carbon footprint is to line dry my clothes. This means that you hang your clothes on a clothesline outside and you let the wind dry your clothes. It's better than putting your clothes in the dryer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Time's Kid of the Year: Water Quality Tester EngineerIf you suddenly had the ability to invent a device that helps humanity, what would it do? (draw a pic and upload it you can!)
Bowen Todd 12/09/2020 6:01 AMI would invent a bird that flew around the world and eat all the polluted gases that are roaming in the air/atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Climate Change ActionWhat's one thing you can do in your daily life to slow down and appreciate our world--the people and the planet? How can you concentrate on doing more "good" instead of competing for "the best"? How has competing to be the best contributed to human impact on the environment?
Bowen Todd 12/02/2020 6:04 AMOne thing that I can do in my own life to appreciate the world is to grow more plants like basil and lavender. I have been growing a few plants lately, for science and for fun. I have found being around those plants and watering them and taking care of them has made me feel really good and it makes me think about what the world would be like if it were greener.
Being the best and being good are two ways different things. Being the best can mean creating new expensive products that use a lot of unhealthy things that are polluting our planet. Being good can mean doing good things for our planet that are sustainable and that can help reduce pollution. I think that I can do good things for my planet by planting more plants and making sure they get what they need. I can also help a tree on my block that is going through a lot of bad things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eliminating food waste during Thanksgiving (or other big meals!)What is one method of food waste reduction (or food saving!) Priya and Dominique talk about in the video What is one thing you can do this Thanksgiving weekend to cut down on food waste (and other types of waste!)
Bowen Todd 11/25/2020 6:25 AMI think that one method of food waste reduction is composting. The food does not go to waste and it goes to a good cause. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learning to FlyWatch the video together and then share a memory of your home, your neighborhood, or another special place that has helped you become who you are today.
Bowen Todd 10/28/2020 5:55 AMA place that has made me who I am today is the Ballfields in Prospect Park. This is the place where I play with friends every night. I play soccer in this part of the park, and without the Ballfields, I would not be who I am today. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Voting RightsWhat does it mean to be able to vote? Should the voting age be lowered to 16?
Bowen Todd 10/21/2020 8:16 AMTo be able to vote it means that you have a ton of responsibility because you are casting your vote out into politics and you want to make sure it is your opinion, not what someone else's opinion is. I don't think that voting should be moved down to age 16 because they will just vote who their friends vote, not noticing their opinion on it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Sir David Attenborough: The Voice of Planet Earth Speaks on Climate ChangeWhat question would you ask Sir David Attenborough? Post a picture of your favorite outdoor spot in NY
Bowen Todd 10/14/2020 6:15 AMSomething that I would ask Sir David Attenborough is what made him want to explore the world.
