Alexandra Vecchio 4/29/2020 11:37 AMI love the Drawdown EcoChallenge because it gives me the opportunity to take individual actions to address climate change but feel like I am also part of a larger community working together. It also is a great platform to help people educate themselves about the intersection between climate change and so many other topics (such as educating women and girls) that we don't normally think about when we try and tackle climate change. I am grateful to be part of the Mass Audubon team. Next year, we are aiming for a Top 5 Finish! :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Alexandra Vecchio 4/29/2020 11:35 AMI can think of a 100 different places I would rather use this money. When we think about how much our wasteful culture (food, clothing, inefficient energy use, etc) causes financial waste, it makes us reexamine the notion that sustainable choices are more expensive or not practical for the average consumer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Communicate With My Elected OfficialsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Alexandra Vecchio 4/13/2020 7:12 PMOne of the best parts of solving the climate crisis is that the solutions already exist. And when it comes to clean energy like solar and wind, these solutions not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but they also create jobs, and ideally healthier communities, in the process. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Alexandra Vecchio 4/02/2020 8:17 PMI really love flavored seltzer water but hate that they often come in individual plastic bottles. My partner and I recently invested in a Soda Stream so we can create our own carbonated beverages and eliminate the plastic bottle waste. -
Alexandra Vecchio 4/02/2020 8:14 PMI know that climate change is the greatest threat facing our planet today. I was excited to lead another Drawdown EcoChallenge team at Mass Audubon because I believe the more people talk about solutions, engage in those solutions, and build community, the better off we will all be. Climate change is often framed as a problem without solutions, but I love that Project Drawdown changes that narrative to focus on scaling up real, impactful solutions that already exist around the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Alexandra Vecchio 4/01/2020 5:23 PMI have enjoyed seeing so many people out and enjoying walks with their partners, kids, dogs, etc. That seems to be a true "silver lining" of so many people working from home and practicing social distancing. It is also great that at times, I see more people around than cars driving by. That is definitely not typical in my urban setting.-
