Viviana's actions
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will avoid buying and using 6 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Research Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will spend 40 minutes each day researching businesses owned by women, people of color, or immigrants that I can support when shopping.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Land Sinks
Buy Bamboo
Bamboo Production
When they are available, I will purchase products made from bamboo instead of wood, plastic, or metal.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 50 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Industry
Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
Refrigerant Management
I will explore the interactive map in the links below to find a supermarket that does not use HFC refrigerants near my home.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Viviana Villalta-Abdon 10/11/2020 11:12 AMweek oct 1st-10th: I've been staying away from using cars as transportation and been using public transportation instead to see if i could get around more or less like before. definitely is better since i find it faster without the traffic and saves money on gas and obviously is better for the environment if everyone took public transport or even biking and walking. also been looking up fast fashion to learn more about how it affects our planet and never knew how bad it was until now. never knew it was the second most polluting industry in the world and also exploits their workers in horrible working conditions. Went around to see any thrift shops in my neighbourhood and found 3 so thats going to be my new shopping place since its just recycling clothes. I looked into palm oil and other oils since its in my diet often and i will stay away as much as possible from oils in my food, as they play quite a big part in deforestation and also put orangutans in more danger than they already are. they burn down forests for the oils which are homes to orangutans too and its so horrible and sad to read about. Nutella has a lot of palm oil so i dropped that product immediately since i found alternative sweet spreads just as good like vegan almond butter. Going to do further research later on about aspects of my diet. -
Viviana Villalta-Abdon 9/29/2020 1:44 PMWeek sept. 20-27: went on a walk around my neighborhood to know more about my neighborhood and found this really cool little vegan shop that sells all kinds of products. I ended up buying there bamboo straws that are really nice quality and are much better than paper straws. Also kept track of how much food my family wastes in a week and I was surprised how much we were wasting. Most of the time we finish everything but it piles up fast. Definitely going to have a talk with my family since I personally hate how much we were wasting. We were wasting about 15pounds of food a week. Im going to look more into the situation.
