Drawdown Ecochallenge: One-time Challenge
As consumers we can conserve our ocean life by taking the proper steps. On the website under the link “What Consumers Can Do” it states, “ Let your favorite businesses know that ocean-friendly seafood’s on your shopping list.” The website gives examples of different seafood’s that are sustainable, one that stuck out to me was the sushi. I’m a big sushi fan and wanted to see a more sustainable way to eat sushi to ensure I’m contributing to our ocean-life conservation. California Rolls are by far my favorite sushi item, when looking up what fish are sustainable when making California rolls these were given: Skate, Squid, Sea bass, Sea Cucumber, Mussels, Lobster, Flounder, and Crab. Looking further into each one I chose crab because I like that the most in my California rolls, it states that “Most crab from Alaska is a ‘Best Choice,’ and crab caught on the U.S. West Coast is a ‘Good Alternative.’” The crab section lists a lot of good, sustainable places to get crab; however, it also lists unsustainable places such as: blue crab from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, both Carolinas, Texas and Virginia along with many others based on the type of crab you’re looking for. This really opened my eyes and helped me think about if my seafood is sustainable before buying or ordering it.
