Smaller portions: I eat smaller portions often, i'm a snacker so don't prepare too much food for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For this meal I prepared less than usual fried rice and orange chicken. I wanted to ensure that no food would go to waste. We ended up still feeling full after dinner and later had a snack! (which we ate all of)

For my contributions to zero waste cooking, I used these extra potatoes I had from preparing a vegetable soup the night prior. I use potatoes mainly to fry in oil and with my breakfast. My partner and I ate everything we prepared.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    makayla wheeler's avatar
    makayla wheeler 4/23/2023 11:49 PM
I carpool with my partner to work and school. We walk and explore around our neighborhood instead of driving. The walking experience can be daunting at first, but afterward it feels great.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

    makayla wheeler's avatar
    makayla wheeler 4/19/2023 10:22 PM
Was able to attend the local Farmers market and bought some carrots, potatoes and oyster mushrooms. Used all for my dinner, and was able to create a vegan meal out of these ingredients. I'm inspired by the passion farmers have for getting fresh (and great) produce into the hands of their customers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    makayla wheeler's avatar
    makayla wheeler 4/19/2023 10:15 PM
I reuse by repurposing old materials and value longevity over trendy-ness. Instead of paper towels, I use washrags. I've cut back on paper plates and no longer use them. If bottle or jars are not being recycled, I use them for storage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    makayla wheeler's avatar
    makayla wheeler 4/19/2023 10:13 PM
I tend to think more with no distractions. Its peaceful and I can just enjoy my food. Practicing mindfulness while I'm eating has been a positive addition to my routine.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    makayla wheeler's avatar
    makayla wheeler 4/19/2023 10:11 PM
I've noticed that daily walks improve my mood and I do appreciate getting outside. More walkable spaces such as crosswalks or trails would make walking more enjoyable. Also more signage for pedestrians and drivers. While this could improve my walks, I still enjoy walking along the sidewalk and looking around.
