Keep Track of Wasted Food

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

Growing up, recycling was heavily enforced in my household. I was always told to recycle, but I never really knew why. When I first left home for college, I began neglecting to recycle, especially because no one else did. However, becoming an environmental science major changed my perspective completely. Though I still never took recycling too seriously, mostly due to my lack of single plastic use, recently I have started to rekindle my childhood relationships recycling. The more I recycle, I am made more aware of the plastic products I often use. Recycling is an easy task, but one that can also be made really difficult. However, if more people recycled worldwide, it would help minimize pollution. Also, if recycling were to become a more standard practice, it would reduce the world’s carbon footprint. I think recycling is definitely something that I want to improve in my daily life. It can have such a positive impact on the environment and takes minimal effort. I look forward to incorporating better recycling practices into my life and better understanding the proper ways to recycle in general.

Hi Shirleya! Recycling is also big at my house, but I have mostly been pretty cognizant of my recycling habits even when moving away for college. Even though I was pretty accustomed to separating out my recyclables from the trash, the same cannot be said about my roommates. I have noticed plastic items ending up in the trash instead of our recycling bin and I have considered talking with them about this issue. Like you mentioned, if more people can follow recycling practices, we can make a positive impact on our environment by diminishing the amount of plastic ending up in our landfills and beyond. Your story has inspired me to continue practicing good recycling habits and to further educate others!

I love to see it! I have been trying to implement better recycling patterns in my apartment too recently. I also have a strong recycling practice at my house too. I just wanted to bring it to my home at UCLA

During the past month I have become more interested in composting. It has been something I have been thinking about a lot for a while, I just didn’t know where to start. Being that my apartment doesn’t have a composting system, I have made the effort to start composting on my own. I have realized that composting makes you more aware of how much food waste you are actually producing. It also has helped me learn better and more proper ways to dispose of food waste. Composting, when done correctly, can offset the amount of climate emissions as well as landfill waste. By composting, there will be less waste going to landfills and less emissions coming from the improper disposal of food waste. Composting has made me more aware of the waste that I produce, and while I have been trying to produce less food waste, I have also learned more efficient ways to dispose of my food waste. Though I have not yet started my own composting system, it is a goal I am setting for myself in the near future.

Wow, I am absolutely surprised that you are thinking outside the box. I definitely agreed with you that a well-management system is necessary to compost. I think it is definitely a way to self-realization how much food and waste we have been disposing of. It sounds like you are a decent member and action-taker in this cause. I am proud that people like you are improving the community through various aspects that concern the bigger level.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Being a student with a STEM major usually comes with a lot of stress. One way I like to relieve stress is to spend time in nature. Spending time in nature can be good for clearing your mind and improving your mood. A study conducted by the University of Michigan found that there are many health benefits that come with taking walks in nature, especially group walks. There were also mental health benefits found with this study. Going outside and being in nature has been proven to be beneficial in many aspects of life, especially health. Despite having allergies, I have always enjoyed being in nature. It has always been a way to brighten my mood and relieve stress. I have found that I enjoy walking through gardens more than anything, so I have made an effort to go to more gardens, especially on campus. Recently I visited one of the gardens at Sunset Rec. Not only is it a nice walk to get there, you can also see and learn about all of the plants that are currently growing. I have also been spending a lot of time at the Botanical Garden as well. To me being in nature is very therapeutic and has always been a great mood booster. I would encourage everyone to try visiting a green space at least once to experience the positive effects it can have.

      Hi Shirleya!

I also found that being able to connect with nature has also helped me with the stress that I have when studying. Sometimes after a long study session, I like to go on a 20-30 minute walk just to clear my mind and focus on the things around me. I'll usually put on some music and walk around aimlessly, and just enjoy the things that I see around me. I feel that afterwards, I was able to focus much more on my studying and other activities that I planned on doing. It's something about that fresh air and scenery around me that is really relaxing and gives me a way to put all my troubles aside.

Recently I have been making an effort to incorporate more zero waste meals into my diet. By doing so, I have found that making zero waste meals not only allows you to be conscious of how much food you waste during meal preparation, but it also allows you to be creative with leftover food scraps. Food waste is responsible for roughly 8% of global emissions. This means that by monitoring and reducing food waste, carbon emissions have the potential to be reduced. With making more zero waste meals, I found that I generally do not create a lot of food waste. Growing up I was taught to always be mindful of wasting food and have tried my best to create minimal waste as possible. Now that I am working towards zero waste meals, I have also learned to be creative with food scraps I wouldn’t normally use. For example, while eating fruits, I was able to make smoothies with the pieces that I wouldn’t normally eat. I have also been able to try new recipes with leftover ingredients instead of repeating the same meal for days in a row. I find zero waste meals to be both interesting and challenging as they allow room for being creative in the kitchen as well as doing your part to reduce waste and carbon emissions.

      Hey Shirleya,
That's really interesting to hear about your effort to incorporate more zero-waste meals into your diet! At home, where I'm not confined to my tiny apartment and have more space and flexibility with how I can be sustainable, I have been trying similar ways to reduce food waste. For example, I recently found out how easy it is to grow fruits and veggies from scraps that I used to just throw away. My ideal house would utilize food waste for compost and also have my fruits and veggies grown at home in a more sustainable way. I definitely will try the methods you mentioned as well it does seem very exciting to be able to be more creative with food prep.

Walking can be seen as one of those tasks that no one really pays attention to or something that people try to avoid, oftentimes it can even feel like a chore. Being a college student, especially a college student at UCLA there is a lot of walking involved. However those walks are usually accompanied by music, phone calls, or some other form of distraction. These walks are also usually goal oriented, typically just getting to and from class. For this challenge I decided that I wanted to take time, excluding the walks to and from class, to go on more walks throughout the week. The intention behind these walks are to get more exercise and spend more time outside, while limiting the amount of usual distractions. During this past weekend, I’ve been going for more walks even during the light rain. For these walks I chose to not use my phone or listen to music. Not only did I have the time to be more mindful, I had the opportunity to use and reflect on all of my senses. For example, I could hear the sound of the rain hitting my umbrella, I was able to watch the rain as it hit the ground, and I could enjoy the smell of the rain. I was also able to pay more attention to my surroundings and the people around me. It was interesting to see how other people were enjoying (or not enjoying) the rain.

Hi Shirleya, I definitely agree with a lot of your sentiments. UCLA has been one of the first walking communities that I have been a part of and I have noticed its impact of it on my mental and physical health. I also like how I can use these walks to clear my mind or just jam to my favorite music!

Hi Shirleya! It's so good to hear that you have taken time out of your day to put away distractions. I admit that I often count the mandatory walks to and from campus as my daily walk, but as you've highlighted, it is important to go on walks without this intention and instead focus on our surroundings, giving our minds time to think. Even though it can be a challenge to go outside and brace the cold/rainy environment, it is also a good opportunity to focus on surroundings that don't happen around us all the time!
