Michelle's actions
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Transportation
Stay home and not travel at all
We should stay home and keep social distance during COVID-19 times anyway. By committing to stay home I can eliminate not just reduce unnecessary travels.
Electricity
Use fan rather than air conditioning
Switch to fan to replace air conditioning for at least 6 hours a day. It's super hot in Hong Kong and with everyone staying home most apartment units turn on their air conditioning.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Michelle Wong 12/13/2020 6:01 PMFinally got a chance to wear this sustainable jacket for a morning walk as it's getting cooler in Hong Kong. I passed by the Alexander Grantham fireboat this morning. Unfortunately we're in the middle of Wave 4 of COVID so the fireboat (museum) is closed. Alexander Grantham (fireboat) - Wikipedia-

Michelle Wong 11/15/2020 10:57 PMI went shopping for a winter sports jacket last night and learnt that some brands had started to use eco-friendly materials. I ended up picking a couple Superdry padded jackets that used recycled polyster (rPET) for the polyester fill. On average, 10 plastic bottles are utilised in each Superdry padded jacket. It's great to look fashionable and be eco-friendly at the same time.-
Michelle Wong 11/23/2020 4:58 PMCertainly, Cindy! I will wear the jacket and post a picture when I'm out next time. :) -
Paula Day 11/20/2020 2:06 PMThanks for sharing! I'd like to investigate this brand. -
Cindy Godwin 11/17/2020 1:25 PMSounds great. Can we see a picture of you in one of your jackets? Maybe when you are on another walk? Love the one you posted last week; helps me to feel like I am ‘visiting’ new places and ‘meeting up’ with colleagues, while keeping our carbon footprint low ;-)

Michelle Wong 10/26/2020 1:11 AMI came across some good tips on how to save electricity at home and would like to share with everyone. Note that the savings estimated on the website are in Canadian dollars. :)

Michelle Wong 10/04/2020 5:46 PMI came across this old article from Reader's Digest when I was looking for energy saving ideas. I was shocked to hear "Roughly 50 devices and appliances in the typical American home are always drawing power, even when they’re not being actively used."
https://www.rd.com/article/wasting-electricity/
After reading this, I just unplugged my devices at home that are used only rarely!

Michelle Wong 8/30/2020 9:58 AMI try to cook all meals at home during COVID. And when I order take-out, I try to order from restaurants that use paper packaging rather than plastic packaging. -
Michelle Wong 8/10/2020 2:15 AMI have decided to turn on the fan rather than air conditioning when I work from home.
