REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Connect With A NonprofitWhat are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 1:32 PMFor girls in my community, one of the most pressing issues is how women are regarded and treated, whether that be at home, at work, at school, or really in any facet of life. Our society has made a lot of great strides in the right direction for women's equality and rights, but, in my opinion, there is still so much that can be done. I know that in this world there are still so many women who suffer everyday, and a lot of this suffrage stems from outdated customs of a society that are still followed today. In more rural and impoverished areas, women tend to face a lot more problems than places that are better off. But, in these places that are better off, like where we live, women still face a lot of issues everyday. Domestic abuse is one of the most prevalent things my community faces, and it goes unnoticed everyday, even to the point where some women don't even realize that it is happening. I think younger generations (like mine) are more aware and more capable of speaking up if they are not being treated fairly, and I feel like we have been taught to see when a relationship might be toxic. This ties in the sustainability and sustainable development because women play such a huge role in the well-being of our planet. Without women, there wouldn't even be life. It is crucial to teach women and young women that they have so much potential, that they are worthy and can be confident, that they don't have to rely on a male-figure to be successful. It all starts with school and teaching these sorts of things at a young age. Women are so valuable and can bring so much to our world. -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 1:23 PMI finished the majority of my research for this, and i'm planning out my reflection now. I think that this topic is one of the more important topics that needs to be discussed in classrooms that teach sustainability. -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 1:21 PMI found this super interesting article about how and why women's empowerment is really important to sustainability and sustainable development. It was from the IIED and it talked about how important women's education is in today's day. It's crazy to think that, yes, we've made a lot of great improvements and strides in the right direction, but there is still so much that we can do! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:28 PMI read some interesting articles and used what we learned in class to help guide me through this challenge! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:27 PMToday I talked to my sister (who's 11) about what I've learned and even got her to watch a short documentary film about this topic! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:21 PMI ran today (this morning) before jumping into studying for exams. It's such a nice day out (first sunshine we've seen in a few days) and I can't wait to walk with my family later! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:20 PMIt was rainy today, but in the breaks of rain I went out for another walk around the neighborhood with my mom. The ponds in the backyard common area were so pretty, and the creek that connects them (which is kind of like a waterfall) was so cool too because of all of the rain! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:19 PMMy mom and I walked around the neighborhood with my dog, and then I went for a timed run (which i think is better than running x amount of miles). It was really nice to get out and enjoy some fresh air! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:18 PMI tried my first TJ's dish today, and it was SO good! I got this frozen mediterranean bowl that was vegan. It had a lot of yummy vegetables and tofu (which I have just started to like) and even my mom liked it. Tonight I'm going to try to make vegan tacos with fajita vegetables, corn, and rice! -
Sarah Wright 4/27/2020 12:15 PMToday I found this awesome instagram account that promotes different/new Trader joe's foods. Some are even vegan/vegetarian, which is really cool because it applies to what I'm doing for this class! Hopefully I can escape quarantine to go to TJ's to get some new/yummy food!
