Overall the challenge has gone very well and has definitely changed up how I normally do things in my life and my daily schedule for the better and has overall had a positive impact.

    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    McKenzie Liston's avatar
    McKenzie Liston 4/30/2023 10:43 PM
Recycling has always been a very important part of my life just because I feel like I learned about it at a young age and it became a very important and almost everyday task. The R's are very important to how we plan to reduce and reuse things we as humans consume.

    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

When choosing this action I was interested in the topic because I had never heard of a peatland but now I feel very understanding of their importance to our climate and our future. I watched 3 different documentaries based in different locations about them educating the importance of these lands. It was interesting to find out that peatlands are wetlands but have a thick soil layer of dead plant matter that hold an immense amount of carbon storage. The importance of the peatlands is absolutely vital for carbon storage, wildlife and all life on earth but yet they are stilled seen as unutilized land that can be dug up for a oil drilling due to the richness under the soil. Attached are the links to the 3 shorter documentaries :)

    Buildings Replace Manual Thermostats
How do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for smart ones will positively impact your life?

    Gabriela Bain 4/30/2023 9:57 PM
I anticipate it being easier to control the temperature, less electricity and gas waste, and more mindfulness surrounding the energy I use. I got a nest because I read good reviews and it tells you what is a more energy conscious temp rather than just what I want it to be.

On the last day of the EcoChallenge, I have realized that I can be way more sustainable in my life. I have realized that I am very privileged in so many ways, such as living in a walkable city, being able to afford fruits and vegetables, and even getting to have food in my plate. However, I don't take advantage of the walking distance between my house and the grocery store (or my ability to walk far distances), I don't eat many fruits and vegetables, and I put too much on my plate and throw it away. With this challenge, I have become more aware of my actions and how I have been harming the planet.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
What did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?

    Vanessa Cruspero's avatar
    Vanessa Cruspero 4/30/2023 8:46 PM
I researched about the Indigenous Climate Action organization. It is an organization that focuses on uplifting Indigenous people's voices, practices, and concerns about the environment. What I noticed about this organization is that they have a strong team and stick together, which is what I can apply to my own life when becoming more active in fighting for climate justice.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I noticed how much food I have wasted, as well as food that my family and I waste together. It is unfortunate that we let leftovers go to trash instead of either making it into another meal (before it went bad) or composting it. I would rather use the money for wasted food on tuition, bills, etc. instead of it going to the trash.

I agree seeing it in real view can be super unfortunate but that means we have things to make improvements on and I hope you found this action helpful to seeing where and how you can utilize the idea of the money wasted is helpful in my opinion :)

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Vanessa Cruspero's avatar
    Vanessa Cruspero 4/30/2023 8:30 PM
After incorporating more fruits and vegetables in my meal, I'm starting to fill my plate up with more vegetables than carbs or protein. They fill me up just as much as fries or mashed potatoes would. Eating more fruits/vegetables is now becoming a habit.

I spend most of my time walking around school. Either walking from class to class, class to library, or library to the parking lot. Today, I walked around my neighborhood and appreciated our trees, sidewalks, and paved road.
