I really enjoyed this ECO challenge! The three things I will continue from the ECOChallenge is to be more mindful at and off the dinner table. I will make more of an effort to eat less meat and reduce my plate size.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

Richer countries eat more meat because they have more access and money to buy it. I know that eating a lot of meat can be damaging to your body, especially for older people. The production of meat is very cruel to animals but also to the people that work in the industry. In the U.S. most workers at a slaughter house and in the meat packing industry are immigrants that are subjected to work for little pay and in very harsh conditions! I want to do a better job of consuming less meat and I will work on that. The consumption of meat is one of the most environmentally polluting thing we do that's a part of our everyday life.

Action Track: Healing & Renewal Go by Bike
How does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?

I feel much more alive when I bike through the city than I do sitting in my car. Riding my bicycle allow me to stop or pull over more easily than I can with a car, it allows me to see more of L.A. for what it is (can be bad or good), and it gives me a sense of ease that I am not polluting our already very polluted air for my regular visits to the park or my grandmothers. I really wish that L.A. can make bicycling more of an incentive as studies find that most people in L.A. drive to get somewhere that is less than 5miles.

Action Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Being outside brings more awareness to what I am doing and to my thoughts as there are less distractions from my computer or my phone. I thrive outdoors, especially in a natural area but unfortunately L.A. is one of the most park deprived city in the U.S. Even after knowing all the issues L.A. has, when I step outside of my home I feel much better.  I have to make an effort to spend my time outdoors at least for a couple of hours so that I can sustain my mental and physical health.

What's the most surprising thing you learned about during this ecochallenge? For me, it was learning about how peatlands can affect climate change. They have a large amount of stored carbon, and if they're not protected, they can release greenhouse gases that speed up climate change, and they can increase the risk of wildfire if they lose their natural water flows. I always think of peatlands in the UK (like the Scottish Highlands), but they're found all around the world, even in tropical rainforests!

My next steps for saving energy are to unplug appliances when they are not being used, and sealing any gaps around my home to save on energy bills.

Action Track: Building Resilience Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

Regenerative agriculture creates more farming jobs; which in turn creates more product for food processing facilities, and manufacturing.
