Today we dropped our first two green bags of bottles and cans, we used the Bottle drop in Forest Grove and now we're watching 'Plastic Wars' on Frontline. There is still much to learn and practice on recycling.

Today was my first regular pickup day day from Stoneboat CSA: bok choy, garlic scapes, garlic leeks, salad and flower starters.
They are close, West Union and Jackson School Road!

That's very exciting! My area does not have a CSA or a composting service, so I am exploring other ways to solve food waste in my household.

My 12 year old son and me created a Bottle Drop account to start recycling bottles and cans. That requires more effort than just placing them in the red recycling bin. This way he can make some money to pay for his Scout's camps -whenever they are possible again. Next, we need to buy green bags from the BottleDrop center.

Last Sunday we visited the Orenco Farmer's Market for the first time to pick up pre-order veggies, pie (Mother's day), plants and other things. It was quite an experience.
Tomorrow I will visit our beloved Saturday Farmer's Market in downtown Hillsboro for the first time this season. It is now a pre-order, car driving market; I look forward to the fresh produce with a broken heart.
But today I have to place the orders. If it is hard for me, I can't just imagine how it is for our vendors, let's support them!

What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

Now that we are collecting egg shells and coffee grounds on the small recycle bin provided by the City of Hillsboro, I would like to learn how to use them to fertilize the tomato, peppers and other veggies we planted.

I love that the City of Hillsboro made it more convenient for us to compost. My family has been using the little bin to collect food leftovers and our yard can to recycle every two weeks. The kids feel that they make a difference.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

All. We live in a place where abundance of goods make us blind to the needs of others. I hope the pandemic will make us realize that our food supply is not guaranteed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

Joined a CSA close to my home. I'm interested in supporting local growers.
