    Transportation Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

Reducing the number of flights I take does far more than purchasing carbon offset credits.  This year I’m vacationing local.

One way to support innovation in sustainable transportation is to keep an eye on developments on kickstarter.com.  So many new ideas there waiting for funding help.

Women reinvest more than men in their communities, which I learned from the supporting women-owned businesses challenges.  Aside from that, equal access is just right.

When women are educated it gives them more agency over their lives. It lowers birth rates and increases the amount of women in the workforce, growing the economy. Women add diversity to the workforce and give back more of their earnings to the community than men on average. Educating women creates a trickle down that positively influences all aspects of community.

Transportation Test Drive an Electric Bike
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?

I often drive short distances.  I did not like the electric motorcycle I tested, but more models are due to be released soon.  I plan to purchase and use an electric for more than half of my trips.

Leading by example is the primary mode of teaching others.  It's as simple as that.  Then it blossoms from there.

I chose to vacation closer to home, which allowed me to avoid air travel.  There are plenty of places to vacation all through the United States.

Excited for the class to begin!
Something tells me my apartment complex doesn't actually recycle. We don't segregate anything, and no one monitors to make sure it's done properly. My suspicion is that our recycling is going into the trash. I will get with my apartment manager Tabitha to discuss ways for improvement!

    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Paul Moore's avatar
    Paul Moore 4/06/2021 10:26 AM
Checking the source of raw materials used to manufacture the products you buy is a way to help protect peatlands, even from a distance.
