How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

Working to make sure both my chocolate and coffee are coming from appropriate sources, as well as encouraging family members to do the same. Another item here is when I do occasionally consume beef, make sure it's local since there are a lot of beef producers in Central and S America that have decimated rainforests. Still figuring out how I can find and limit where my soy products are coming from... it's kind of in everything.

Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

We are usually very conservative with our food. We eat leftovers and have instilled that value in our children. But this week we ended up throwing away food, and I felt terrible. it was take-out food. The food did not taste that great, it was highly caloric, one of the items turned bad quickly and made my husband ill, and we realized that the staff packing up the food had not worn masks. Still, it is guilt inducing to throw food away. I think that it is much easier to throw away food you do not make yourself. Which does not mean you should not go out and eat, but you should be frugal with your order, especially when you are ordering take-out and cannot ask questions before you order.

    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

I feel so much better having smaller portions and it is good for keeping in shape too

I love being part of a team effort  with a goal to keep the Drawdown solutions right in front of us. By practicing and taking action  -we act our way into beliefs  especially in these restricted movement times--- we can;'t protest but we can still do something.
The food waste and related solutions are very powerful. I read a book Calle "Food Foolish:" that may have been a Drawdown resource --but it really struck me that small steps by millions can really make a difference.

Hi team! We're so close to the finish line of this challenge and Earth Month. I'm incredibly proud to be a part of this amazing community, and it's been a great month watching our collective climate action grow in impact. Tomorrow is the LAST day to check in for all the actions you've selected. So hop on over for one last check in (and see if you can win any competitions you set with your family and friends)!

Climate action doesn't end after this challenge. If you've found the Ecochallenge experience valuable, we encourage you to stay a part of the Mass Audubon Community. Follow us on all social media (@MassAudubon) and visit our website (massaudubon.org/climate) for more information on our climate action initiatives and how we can continue to work together to fight climate change. Let's see if we can keep 7th place - or better - until the end of this challenge. Go team!

I love the Drawdown EcoChallenge because it gives me the opportunity to take individual actions to address climate change but feel like I am also part of a larger community working together. It also is a great platform to help people educate themselves about the intersection between climate change and so many other topics (such as educating women and girls) that we don't normally think about when we try and tackle climate change. I am grateful to be part of the Mass Audubon team. Next year, we are aiming for a Top 5 Finish! :)

I can think of a 100 different places I would rather use this money. When we think about how much our wasteful culture (food, clothing, inefficient energy use, etc) causes financial waste, it makes us reexamine the notion that sustainable choices are more expensive or not practical for the average consumer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Forlorn apple skins  sat ready for the compost--left from an apple sauce pressing --I grabbed them for a second pressing--just removing the seeds and the core. I then added  some old  sauterne to add zest. Pretty OK----not great so eating slowly but will not throw out under any circumstances.

    Transport Conduct Virtual Meetings
How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

I think that norms should be reviewed at the start of each meeting ----it becomes even moire important to value all voices. One meeting I attended was dominated by 3-4 people --some folks are reticent about virtual sharing. One tip is to move closer to the screen both for audio and asserting presence.

Found a new brand to use - Boody! Underwear is one of the few things to buy new at this point, so might as well make it ecologically manageable!
